Ядерное детство
Nagasaki
A million paper cranes
could not save you.
Now your children walk
across the shadow bridge.
It took only an instant
for the terrible light to
sweep away your
ancient, wounded dreams.
Now the boiling river
carries the dust of your soul
to the angry bay and
out to the hopeless sea.
But soon the gentle moon
will rise and gather your sorrow
and carry it high up into
the cool, silent mountains.
Dream of the New Year.
Of cherry tree blossoms.
Of bright koi swimming
in clear temple pools.
Your children have crossed
over the shadow bridge now.
Know that they are safe.
Pray they do not know.

HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI
Early on two August mornings
A Fat man and a Little boy changed my world forever
They made the sun fall from the sky
causing a blazing inferno from the hypo center of hell
Leaving scorched and barren cities
The hope for a peaceful world disappeared
in a horrifying instant
Like the terror of a mother
who suddenly realizes her child is missing
The Fat man and the Little boy forced us to ponder
if someday we would be mere shadows on a wall
Or charred corpses
The Fat man and the Little boy
are ferocious beasts that dwell in the hearts of mankind
Only when these beasts are slain
will humanity see the end of war.

Incidence of intracranial meningiomas in Nagasaki atomic-bomb survivors
Abstract
Among the Nagasaki atomic-bomb survivors registered at the Scientific Data Center for Atomic-Bomb Disaster, Nagasaki University School of Medicine, 45 cases of surgically treated intracranial meningioma were collected from 6 hospitals with departments of neurosurgery in or near Nagasaki City during the period from 1973 to 1992. All 45 patients were over 40 years of age at the time of diagnosis. Subsequently, the 45 cases were statistically analyzed in relationship to the estimated distance from the hypocenter by age, gender, intracranial location, histology and latent period. The analysis showed a high correlation between incidence of meningiomas and distance from the hypocenter. The incidence among Nagasaki atomic-bomb survivors over 40 years of age, especially in those proximally exposed, appears to be increasing, in inverse proportion to the exposure distance, since 1981, 36 years after the explosion of the atomic bomb. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
